I have a sermon on my site somewhere that is about this, I think it is tited "The Two Kinds of Repentance". Scrooge is a great example. I use Jean Valjean from Les Miserables as mine. After the priest forgave him for stealing and actually added more to him- he was so shamed by the love that he became obsessed with paying back a deed that he could never repay through the actions of his life.
