-God is Still Calling Missionaries…

Middle East

(Middle East by rogiro via Flickr)

From Baptist news: A story of God calling one American family to be missionaries in North Africa and the Middle East and the obstacles they faced along the way including all they left behind.

The couple was inspired by the testimony of a missionary telling about God reaching out to Muslims:

For the first time, Amy heard stories about God appearing to Muslims in dreams and visions. The more the missionary shared, the more Amy wanted to go.

"I was very jealous that people were seeing God move in miraculous ways, and I was like, ‘Lord, I want to see that.’ … And I just told Him right then, ‘Lord, if You’ll call Seth, I’ll go.’"

Her husband Seth did respond to an alter call for those who believed that God was calling them to be missionaries.

Then read this account of an Australian Pentecostal couple who have dedicated their lives and their family’s to sharing the Gospel with the neglected Aborigines in the outback.

Read about ‘power encounters’, healings, and miracles along the way as they have established churches among this neglected hard to reach people. In J. Lee Grady latest article:

-Happy Thanksgiving and Praise the Lord

"The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth"...

                       (Image via Wikipedia)

Thanksgiving is a uniquely American celebration that began nearly four centuries ago with a deeply religious people, the Pilgrims, giving thanks to God for preserving them though a very hard year and bringing them their first bountiful harvest which they gratefully shared with their indigenous neighbors.

It was our first President George Washington who proclaimed that our first official national day of public thanksgiving should be dedicated by observing and:

“…by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God.

In recent years the ‘politically correct’/secular crowd has rewritten the history of the first Thanksgiving placing an emphasis upon the hand that the indigenous American Indians played in helping the original Pilgrim community to survive. In the process they have redirected the emphasis on thanks towards neighbors and away from the providence of Almighty God.

While it is always good to be thankful for others who have enriched our own lives and certainly that has a good part to play in the celebration. Nevertheless the major emphasis of Thanksgiving should always be upon God as it was at the very first.

For me and my family, we will be praising and thanking the Lord God Almighty for the bounties and the providence that he has bestowed upon us this year in the name of his Son Jesus Christ. May Our Heavenly Father bless your family today and continue to bless all of us and this nation in the year to come.           *Top

…and the Blind See!

Bethel Church in Redding, CA
(Image via Wikipedia)

Pastor Mike mentioned this during the morning service at VCC today:

Bethel Church, Redding

“A man came to be baptized at church last night. He was completely blind. As soon as he came out of the water, he began to see! After additional prayer, he began describing what he saw. He could read the signs in the hallway!”

Response: There’s a life changing event both in time and eternity-Praise the Lord.

Can’t tell you how many hundreds of folks are healed through their ministry there in Redding CA . Thousands if you include the Healing Rooms International ministry which was started by one of their Elders.

Hear about it all of the time since they are kind of a ‘sister’ church to ours. Last time our youth got together with theirs on a trip to Mexico it took several hours in a service at VCC to tell about all of the healings and miracles.           *Top

“We Need Another Jesus Movement”

Jesus

                     (Image via Wikipedia)

Every once in a while J. Lee Grady comes out with an article that hits it right on the head. In this one he says that we need to get back to Jesus and the Bible like those simple days of the ‘Jesus People’ movement of the 70’s. Well worth a read:  “We Need Another Jesus Movement”

Here is where he hits us hard:

The Jesus movement was primarily focused on—surprise!—Jesus. Theology was not complicated, pastors weren’t trying to be hip or sophisticated or tech-savvy; and we hadn’t yet created a Christian subculture with its own celebrities and political power bases.

… In my travels this past year I’ve been horrified to learn that many Spirit-filled believers have given up the discipline of reading their Bibles even semi-regularly. They prefer a steady diet of culturally relevant, fast-paced, techno-theology that is a poor substitute for discipleship.

Many charismatics have developed the attitude that a simple focus on Christ isn’t enough. We’d rather go to a “prophetic encounter” to hear what Obama’s chances are in 2012, or experience some exotic spiritual manifestation (gold dust, gems falling out of the ceiling), or ask Rev. Flash-in-the-Pan to pray for us for the sixteenth time so we can receive yet another “special anointing” that we will probably never use.

In the midst of all this charismatic gobbledygook, where is Jesus? Am I the only one out there who is weary of this distraction?

Response: Amen!

I remember the Jesus people movement well and I live 15 miles from where it all started and still see the effects of it.  I go to a church that traces its beginning in the midst of it with a bunch of folks that came to Jesus then and part of a movement that started in the aftermath.

All of us look fondly back on those days when the Holy Spirit fell upon a bunch of hippies and college students in Orange County California and did a sovereign work that is still on-going.

God raised up a bunch of uneducated nobodies and turned them into Bible teachers and mega-pastors. The Holy Spirit fell upon a bunch of hippies and students and instilled in them the notion that everybody gets to play and all are called to minister. Plus he called forth a bunch of musicians who demonstrated that guitars and contemporary music could be used to worship God and bless people in the name of Jesus Christ.

For us the message that Grady brings is an admonition to return to our first love- Jesus. Then let the heavens open once more and transform a new generation and another half a million or so folks in Southern California and eventually touch millions of folks from sea to shining sea.

-Exorcism for Today?

A woodcut from 1598 shows an exorcism performe...

                 (An Exorcism via Wikipedia)

This last week Roman Catholic authorities in America were gathered together in a conference on Exorcism noting that the ministry had declined considerably in America.

The meeting, was held in Baltimore with over fifty bishops and sixty priests in attendance discussing and learning the procedures of the Catholic ‘Rite of Exorcism’.

Dr. Albert Mohler (President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) responded on his blog with his views on Exorcism and why ‘evangelicals’ don’t have a ‘rite of exorcism’ in the following article:  “On Exorcism and Exorcists: An Evangelical View

Here’s the money quote from the article:

“We should respect the power of the Devil and his demons, but never fear them. We do not need a rite of exorcism, only the name of Jesus. We are not given a priesthood of exorcists — for every believer is armed with the full promise of the Gospel, united with Christ by faith, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.”

Response: I respect Dr. Mohler and normally agree with him on most issues. I even met him at a blogging conference several years ago. However on this issue he came up short as far as I am concerned.

He acknowledged that Jesus and the Apostles cast out demons but really didn’t seem to consider any special attention to it as necessary today.

I know that in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles there are those who specialize in Spiritual warfare and casting out demons. Dr. Mohler didn’t say that ‘exorcism isn’t for today’ but from my perspective seemed to imply it.

What do you think?

I have participated in praying for folks and casting out demons in the past and have some incredible, exhilarating, and chilling memories of the experience.  One thing I know is true- the ‘name of Jesus’ is above any other name.            *Top

-International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church –sponsored by Open Doors. Please pray for Christians under persecution around the world.

Remember Iraqi Christians in particular and others in the Middle East. Also pray for the Christian community in China and Pakistan where they are supposed to have a little freedom but really don’t.

Remember also to pray for the hidden revivals going on in Iran and North Korea. Christian converts in those countries are under a sentence of death when discovered.

This Way to the Holy Ghost Revival

Rom 15:5-7
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.  -ESV

Last weekend was spent at a men’s retreat up at Big Bear, CA. I always look forward to the time spent together with other men from my home church- VCC Laguna Niguel as a high point of every year and was not disappointed.

The best part is the encouragement that I always receive and the clarity of vision for ministry that I usually come away with.

Pastor Dave gave the keynote talk and the scripture above was one of the references. Interestingly at least twice when he was pointing out the importance of supporting one another with endurance and encouragement he mistakenly (?) combined the two words together and said- ‘enduragement’. It became a running joke for the weekend. However, I found the new word to be especially helpful in remembering and applying the message. Now I am not all that sure it was really so much of a mistake.

The best part of the weekend was when we got into small groups and prayed over each other’s families, jobs, and ministries and the Holy Spirit fell on everyone there. There is nothing like having other brothers pray with you over the most important and intimate things of your life. Then feeling and receiving not only support from brothers in the faith but also encouragement to endure and live out your faith in such a way that it actually makes the world around you a better place to live.

So I submit this to you:  I pray that all of you will receive the same kind of ‘enduragement’ that I received last weekend from my brothers in Christ. If so, then Revival could become a reality in your everyday experience of living.

Come Holy Spirit and bring new vision and enduragement to all who read this and let them be touched with fresh fire that ignites their lives and touches everything and everyone they come in contact with- families, neighbors, workers, store clerks. Let the light of the Holy Spirit in them leap out and touch everyone. Let it be a surprise and let it be revival- not in tents or churches but everywhere.            *Top

-Should Christians be Involved in Politics?

LAS VEGAS - OCTOBER 28: Kristy Rivera (L) tur...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

We just voted on Tuesday and everyone is still talking about the results over the water cooler at work and in the marketplace. Most are exceedingly glad that all of the political ads are finally over with.

I read one article this morning that claimed Evangelical Christians participated in greater numbers on Tuesday that ever before and the vast majority voted Republican across the board.

While it is still fresh in our minds and experience here’s a question- should faithful Biblical Christians be so involved in politics?

Here are two articles that go about answering this question very differently

First: “The Church as a Prophetic Voice”

by Harry R. Jackson Jr., (senior pastor of Hope Christian Church near Washington, D.C.)

Here is the conclusion of his article:

“The ultimate authority in the U.S. is not a king or monarchy. The collective will of the people is supposed to be the final bastion of power. Therefore, Christians will have to answer to God for the decisions made by our secular society because self-identified believers are still the numeric majority of the U.S. In this democratic context our right to vote is a sacred trust.

If we all voted with focused, strategic unity we could turn America around in just a few years. Are you ready to make history?”

Second: “The Church as an Alternative Society”

by Brian Zahnd (pastor of Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Mo.)

In the article he quotes Theologian Stanley Hauerwas:

“The church doesn’t have a social strategy, the church is a social strategy.” Instead of trying to force change on the wider society through legislation, we are to exemplify the alternative—the kingdom of God—by actually living it!”

Response: I have always been interested in politics and especially this year. However I have come to appreciate the need for those in the ministry not to mix the two together. If God has called you to be a politician then so be it. There is a real need for Christians of integrity to be involved in the political process.

However, I no longer believe that it is good for the church to be involved in partisan politics and for evangelical Christians to be so identified with one particular political party.

In the process we send indirect mixed messages to people that if they want to join with Christ than they will have to sign up as Republicans and become conservative in their politics. It can actually become a stumbling block for some- a wall that can actually keep some ‘liberal’ folks from pursuing Christ.

Even though I have definite conservative political opinions I have made a real effort to make room for and have grace towards those of different political persuasions than I. Guess what, Christ died for them also and they are my brothers and sisters also.

I am particularly concerned with the obvious differences politically between substantially white and black churches and then throw in Latino Pentecostals into the mix and it is easy to see that faithful Biblical Christians can have very divergent political views after all.

There are issues that most Biblical Christians can agree on including abortion, marriage, and integrity. However, I happen to believe that the best way to change America is to bring Christ into the marketplace, and to the neighborhoods, homes and families.

Come Lord Jesus and bring full-on revival to our land and to our churches. Amen.

-Book Review: “The Heavenly Man”

By Brother Yun with Paul Hattaway (London & Grand Rapids: Monarch Books, 2002, 351 pages)

The incredible true story of Chinese evangelist Liu Zhenying known to his Christian friends as Brother Yun. It is his own personal testimony along with the reflections of his wife Deling who supported him in the ministry and though many trials and tribulations. The ups and downs, the joys, the victories, along with the low points, failures, and all of the warts. It is there for all to read.

The Communist government did everything they could to destroy the Christian church in China and very little visibly remained by 1970.

The story of brother Yun gives you a small taste of how the Christian church relegated to the dust bin of history rose up to become the force it is today in China with more than 100 million believers. It was entirely a move of God and this story reads like the book of Acts.

An incredible life changing book, one that I highly recommend. Unfortunately Brother Yun has become the target of critics within the Western church. Many have a hard time believing all of the healings and miracles he testifies of here.

Let the Holy Spirit speak to you though this book and you will never be the same. Hereafter that comfortable pew you sit in on Sunday will never be quite so comfortable again. Beware, you could actually receive a new calling and a new vision of where the lord wants to take you.
