Scrooge: A Picture of True Repentance?

Here’s a good blog to read to end the year.  Mark Hadfield wrote about repentance today on his blog madetopraisehim:

Many people coming into churches are taught to tell Jesus that they’re sorry for their past so that their mistakes can be blotted out. Now personally, I don’t think that’s the repentance Jesus talked about when He talked about the Kingdom Of God. I think that’s regret: a step on the road to repentance maybe, but not repentance. I think repentance is to completely change our system of thinking and our system of living. Our only response to the Good News of the Kingdom can be to start thinking and living like people of the Kingdom.

Amen Mark!

He finishes off his thoughts about repentance by offering Charles Dickens’ Scrooge as a picture of true repentance.            *Top

4000 Rededicate This Nation Under God

400 years ago English settlers landed on Virginia Beach and planted a cross, dedicating their new land to God. That was the beginning of the Jamestown settlement but also the beginning of this Nation under God (USA).

4000 Christians gathered Sunday (4/29) on the same beach marking the anniversary of the original event and placed hundreds of crosses in the sand rededicating this nation to God and his Son Jesus Christ. There was a 5 hour worship service including statements of repentance and numerous prayers for renewal and revival for America.

Dr. Charles Crabtree (AG Assist. Gen. Superintendent) remarked:

“We’re praying that this will be a trigger, there are turning points throughout all history. The upper room was a turning point for the early church and the reformation was a turning point. There have to be times in history when God’s people call on His name and humble themselves and pray and turn and repent [before] God hears and answers that prayer.”

We certainly hope so Dr. Crabtree.

“What Jesus Demands from the World” -Demand #2: Repent

A continuing series reflecting on the book: “What Jesus Demands from the World”, By John Piper (Wheaton, Ill: Crossway Books, 2006, 400 pgs.)

Jesus began his public ministry with the declaration: “Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand.” (Matt. 4:17) What is repentance? What does it mean, and more important, what did Jesus mean when he said- Repent? Read more »

It Is the Heart of The Father To Bless His Church—Satan Has Other Plans!

I recently read three prophetic words that started me thinking, and praying. The first one was in Charisma Magazine (Oct. 2006) by James Robison: Humility…or Humiliation? He brings a warning to America and the church which may be summarized:

“We have a choice. God is calling the American church to repentance and… brokeness. … All that can be shaken will be shaken to its foundation. … I am convinced that brokeness will come to the church and to America. The choice is ours: humility or humiliation!”

Yom Kippur: The Biblical ‘Day of Atonement’

Today, October 2, 2006, is a special day on the Biblical calendar-named Yom Kippur, or in English-’The Day of Atonement’. It is the most important holy day of the year for Jews. It is day when Jewish folk consider their sins, ask for forgiveness and look for ways to make amends in the year to come. Many wear white shirts or clothes on this day to symbolize purity and to acknowledge the Biblical promise that sins will be made white as snow. Observances traditionally held in synagogues or temples, end with the blowing of the shofar.

While Christians do not traditionally recognize the special days or events in the Biblical (Jewish) calendar, ‘Messianic’ Christians do, and many others are enriched by the symbols, and find significance in the times and seasons that are represented. The Lord’s Supper and The Resurrection cannot be completely separated from ‘The Passover’, and the ‘Day of Pentecost’ is one Biblical/Jewish day still recognized in the church calendar.

Biblical New Year -A Time For Introspection and Change

The high holy days of the Jewish calendar began at sundown Friday 9/22/06 -Rosh Hashanah and continue through nightfall on October 2-Yom Kippur. You ask, what significance does this has for Christians? The Jewish calendar is Biblical and God still seems to honor it in many ways. Read more »
